I am an employee of Meriter and I not only think of Meriter hospital as an amazing employer, but also as an amazing caretaker.
At 34 weeks of my pregnancy, being followed by UW midwives, I was at work, and not feeling very well. I was taking a dinner break when the midwife on call made a stop to my unit to find me to let me know I was going to be going on bed rest. Ss the midwife was stopping by my unit, I actually was up on the OB unit heading to triage because I was not feeling well. The midwife came to meet me there to let me know my labs were elevated and I was diagnosing me with pre-eclampsia. Unfortunately my vitals were so significant that I was diagnosed with severe pre-eclampsia and the midwife, Jodi, told me they were going to have to induce me at 34 weeks.
I was scared and horribly terrified of what was going to happen, but Jodi stayed with me to calm my nerves the entire time and reassure me that my baby was going to be fine. Unfortunately, my diagnosis was out of her scope of care, so I saw a UW doctor at Meriter. The OB senior resident, Effie, saw me and was very reassuring and let me know that my baby was going to be ok at 34 weeks. Effie also said my baby would be in the NICU, but would have no long term health problems. The doctor also called the NICU staff and Dr. Kling along with her resident came down to see my husband and me. They let me know what to expect with my baby at delivery and in the NICU. The staff was extremely wonderful, caring and reassuring to me and my husband. My son was delivered without any complications the next morning and taken up to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.
My husband was able to stay with my son in the NICU and the nurses in the NICU were wonderful. With my condition, I was bedridden for another 24 hours, so I was unable to see my son. As a mother, not seeing your child is heart-wrenching, so my nurse in the OB unit was able to get a special order for me to be taken in my hospital bed to go and see my son for the first time. The next day, my son's amazing nurse was able to bring him down to me under a special circumstance. My son was in the NICU for 3 weeks and the staff in the NICU was amazing, especially Katie, the night nurse who called me in the mornings to let me know how well my son ate! It's a professional environment, but most of all, the staff in the NICU are loving and took care of my son as if he was one of their own.
All of our care was amazing -- from the midwife service who took care of me during my entire pregnancy, to the nurses who helped deliver my son on the OB unit, to the doctor who delivered my son with no complications and took care of me following my delivery with my complications, and finally to the NICU staff who took care of my son.
I am proud to be an employee of such a wonderful place, but most of all, the staff goes above and beyond their call of duty and cared for my son, myself and my husband. They treated us as if we were their own family. A big heart-felt thank you to such a wonderful place and to the staff that brought my son into this world safely!
