I Died and You Gave Me Back My Life

In late 2002, I died at the age of 46.

I came to Meriter through the ER and within 30 minutes, was diagnosed with cardiomyopathy.

All I can say is that if you are ever thinking about suffering from heart failure - do it in Meriter's Emergency Room. Statistics say that I had a 3% chance of survival. And Meriter staff and I worked together to make that happen.

I don't remember much. But I do remember being in the Intermediate Care Unit (IMCU). My nurse, Kathy, was wonderful. And Dr. Schilling moved quickly to get me on the respirator. Dr. Nelson managed the balloon pump on the left side of my heart. All of those things kept my heart ticking. I will especially remember, even while in a coma-like state, seeing a picture of my dear granddaughter on the bulletin board in my room. I was drawn to that and it comforted me. It's the first thing I saw when I truly "woke up." She's a special girl and is now seven years old.

I cannot say enough about the great treatment I had and how the many members of my family were treated. Everyday, I feel like my life is a miracle and that I will never take it for granted again. I get the chance to enjoy my grandson and my granddaughter, when I might not have had that opportunity.

This year is my fifth anniversary of my life. Thank you Meriter for giving me more time to spend with my family!
Judy
