I have been in health care for 40 years. I am a registered nurse, and now work as a legal nurse consultant with a law firm.
Last fall I was diagnosed with breast cancer and scheduled for a lumpectomy shortly after. From the time I was admitted to Meriter until my discharge later that day, I received the kind of care that I, as a nurse, would hope I always provided my patients.
On the day of surgery, I was apprehensive, anxious, fearful and sad. I had great faith in my UW Health surgeon, Dr. Catherine Beckman. And I was totally at ease with my anesthesiologist, Dr. Larry Rothstein. I knew I was in good (great!) hands. What I did not know was the extent to which Meriter would honor my wishes regarding my life partner's presence.
I had asked that through all tests and procedures, my partner Anne accompany me. I was told that she could. And it was true. In the one instance where there wasn't enough room for an extra person because there were eight staff members in a tiny room, the nurse set up a chair right outside the room for Anne. During my procedure, she was near and they kept her informed on how I was doing.
Staff treated both of us with respect and was inclusive of Anne during any explanation. I cannot say enough positive things about Meriter Hospital. I tell my family and friends what a wonderful experience I had at a time that was filled with great stress and sadness. Thank you so much for taking such wonderful care of not only me but also of my partner. Diane
