Offered through the Meriter Women’s HeartCare Program, HeartScarves is an initiative of WomenHeart: The National Coalition for Women with Heart Disease. The focus of this project is to present handmade red scarves to women hospitalized with heart disease as a gesture of support while providing education about heart disease.
The red scarf has been chosen as a symbol of the lifeline of support that exists among us, which in turn, becomes a part of a woman’s healing journey. HeartScarves are never sold, but freely given. The love and attention that goes into the creation of each scarf touches the hearts of both the givers and the receivers. Since the effort began in 2009, Meriter has delivered scarves to over 300 women!
To continue carrying this effort forward, we are looking for volunteers to knit, crochet, or weave the red scarves. While there is not a strict pattern to follow, below are suggested guidelines:
- Shades of red
- Lightweight and soft (scarves are worn for comfort, not warmth)
- 3-4 inches wide and 50-54 inches long
Feel free to use your favorite scarf pattern! If you have one you’d like to share, please email it to firstname.lastname@example.org. Completed scarves may be mailed or dropped off at Meriter’s Heart & Vascular Hospital (202 S. Park Street, Madison, WI 53715, 10th Floor reception desk), Monday – Friday, 7:30am – 4:00pm.
Feel free to pass this invitation on to friends and family members who may also like to contribute. And thank you for volunteering your talents towards this worthy cause!
