The Meriter McKee and Meriter Medical Clinic - Middleton Diabetes Self-Management Education Programs have been awarded Recognition from the American Diabetes Association (ADA). These programs are an expansion of the West Washington program, which is a multisite of the original program at Meriter Hospital, serving the perinatal population.

The ADA Recognition effort, begun in the fall of 1986, is a voluntary process which assures that education programs have met National Standards for Diabetes Self management Education Programs. Programs that achieve Recognition status have a staff of knowledgeable health professionals who can provide state-of-the-art information about diabetes management and offer high-quality education services for participants.

"One of the primary goals of the Education Recognition program is to assure high quality education for patient self-care, and now we're proud to be able to provide this program out of each of our three primary care clinics," said Meriter ADA Advisory Group Chair April Eddy, RN, CNS, CDE (APNP). "The team strives to provide clear and consistent education, tools and multidisciplinary care so that each patient can have the capability to maintain good health and to lower the risk of diabetes complications."

Self-management education is an essential component of diabetes treatment. Programs that comply with the National Standards guidelines ensure greater consistency in the quality and quantity of education offered to people with diabetes. The participant in an ADA Recognized program will be taught self-care skills that will promote better management of his or her diabetes treatment regimen. Unnecessary hospital admissions and some of the acute and chronic complications of diabetes may be prevented through self-management education.

The Meriter ADA advisory group oversees both the perinatal and Meriter clinic programs and includes representatives from each. This group consists of patient and community representatives, program instructors, physicians and other experts such as social work and pharmacy. The instructors at Meriter Clinics are Elizabeth Johnson RN, CDE, Holly Gerhard RD, CDE and Gretchen Diem, PhD. This group collaborates with endocrinologists Deborah Wubben, MD, MPH and Simone Glinberg, MD, as part of the Meriter Diabetes Care Team. The program offers class and individual instruction and to all adult patients with diabetes.
