Meriter Hospital is proud to offer a comprehensive Birmingham hip resurfacing program. Patients receive state-of-the-art pre-operative, surgical and post-operative care based on the proven European hip resurfacing model.
The hip resurfacing procedure is an innovative way to relieve pain while allowing patients to get back to their normal activities quicker. Rather than replacing the entire hip joint, as in a total hip replacement, hip resurfacing simply shaves and caps a few millimeters of bone within the joint. For this reason, most surgeons feel it is ideal for patients under age 65 who live active lifestyles.
Patients benefit from:
Hip resurfacing is intended for young, active adults who are under 60 years of age and in need of a hip replacement. Adults over 60 who are living non-sedentary lifestyles may also be considered for this procedure. However, this can only be further determined by a review of your bone quality.
There are certain causes of hip arthritis that result in extreme deformity of either the head of the femur or the hip socket. These cases are usually not candidates for hip resurfacing.
Meriter offers an innovative approach to rehabilitation with a 7-day program that seamlessly moves you from hip resurfacing surgery to a rehabilitation stay to home. This is the only phased program available in the area. Patients from throughout the country have done their research, and chosen our program based on our innovative therapy approach.
After surgery, patients experience HipHab, a rehabilitation stay in their own apartment home. Patients are steps away from an expansive Aquatic & Wellness Center for land- and water-based therapy. An added benefit is that the apartment homes are located in the heart of downtown Madison, which offers ample opportunities for dining, cultural and leisure activities.
The Birmingham hip resurfacing technique, which has been offered in Europe and other countries for more than a decade, is the first FDA-approved hip resurfacing system and the most proven prosthesis on the market.
