Interventional cardiology is a specialty area that focuses specifically on catheter-based treatments. Using cardiac catheterization, which is also known as an angiogram, our interventional specialists are able to locate clogged or narrowed areas in your coronary arteries and determine how well your heart muscle and valves are functioning.  If you are diagnosed with coronary artery disease (CAD) or another cardiovascular illness that is limiting oxygen-rich blood from reaching your heart muscle, our specialists are skilled in the latest noninvasive and catheter-based treatment options including:

Angioplasty – Angioplasty procedures are used to unblock narrowed heart arteries to help reduce chest pain and restore blood flow to your heart. These techniques can even open completely blocked arteries—a condition known as chronic total occlusion. Compared to the national average, Meriter Heart & Vascular physicians consistently exceed the “door to balloon” time benchmark of less than 90 minutes established by The Joint Commission.

Stent procedures –
A small wire frame, called a stent, is placed into your newly opened artery to help prevent it from narrowing again.

Ethanol septal ablation –
If you have hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, a disease that causes your heart muscle to become abnormally thick, this technique is used to reduce that thickness and help restore blood flow to your heart.

Valvuloplasty –
During this procedure, balloon angioplasty is used to dilate diseased heart valves to improve blood flow between the heart chambers.

Percutaneous left ventricular support  –
Our cardiac interventionists are skilled in using the latest devices to offer lifesaving options during complex cardiac procedures.

A Meriter First:

Meriter Heart & Vascular specialists were the first in the Madison area to offer Enhanced External Counter Pulsation (EECP) therapy for cardiac patients. During this safe, noninvasive procedure, compression is applied to areas of your legs to improve your circulation and blood flow to your heart. Patients have reduced pain and discomfort and have returned to normal activities. In clinical studies, over 75 percent of patients benefit from EECP treatment and sustain improvement for up to three years.

Chest Pain Center

Few symptoms are more concerning than chest pain. The first thought that comes to mind is that you might be having a heart attack. Meriter is home to Wisconsin’s first and Madison’s only accredited Chest Pain Center awarded by the Society of Chest Pain Centers and Provider Accreditation. This third party recognition is a strong endorsement of the quality of our care. Our center features specially trained staff and the most advanced cardiac diagnostic equipment available to rapidly evaluate your pain and provide the necessary treatment.

During a heart attack, time is muscle. Knowing the signs and symptoms of a heart attack could save your life or the life of a loved one.
