Room Service for Our Patients with Diabetes

To control your blood sugar you need to make healthy meal choices. Your physician will order a calorie level appropriate to your needs. Your meals should include calories from carbohydrates (starches/sugars), protein and fat.

Carbohydrate calories are very important in controlling your blood sugar. Look at the chart below to determine the number of carbohydrate servings you may choose for each meal within your assigned calorie level. A carbohydrate serving contains approximately 15 grams of carbohydrate.

Calorie Levels Servings/Meal
1200-1500
1600-1800
2000-2200
2400-2700

Your menu details how many carbohydrate servings are in each food item. When placing your order, make sure you choose within the range allowed for each meal. In addition to carbohydrates you should also choose a source of protein and a small amount of fat to complete your meal. Our room service representatives will assist you in this process.

The timing of your meals with your medication and with testing your blood sugar level is very important. If you are on insulin or other diabetes medications, you will need to plan your meal times with your nurse. It is also helpful to have your meals spaced evenly throughout the day.

If you have any questions about your diet or would like to learn more about eating healthy with diabetes please ask to see a dietitian.
