Q: My patients had skin biopsies and now are receiving a bill from Meriter Labs and WI Pathologists. Are they being double billed?
A: No, they are not being double billed. Meriter Labs performs the technical preparation of the specimen so that a Pathologist may then look at the sample and determine the diagnosis or state of the specimen. Meriter Labs will bill for the technical preparation and WI Pathologist will bill the Pathologist fee for reviewing the specimen. This practice is in accordance with guidelines approved by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS).
