Information about Back Pain
Unfortunately, back pain is extremely common - studies estimate that as many as 80% of Americans have experienced back pain at one time.
- After the first episode of pain, most people recover one week to two months later.
- As many as two-thirds of these people will have recurrent episodes of back pain.
- As many as 85% of these people will have severe, disabling pain every three months to three years.

Individualized Treatment
Your first visit will be with a physical therapist specializing in spine care. Over the course of an hour, your therapist will evaluate you and develop a specific treatment plan and set goals to meet your personal needs.

Pain Reduction
Use of appropriate interventions may include:
- Ultrasound
- Electrical stimulation / TENS
- Manual Therapy - mobilization, manipulation, massage
- Traction
Functional Restoration
Being able to return to activities you used to participate in is the primary goal of therapy at Meriter. Functional restoration may include:
- Strengthening exercises
- Flexibility exercises
- Posture and body mechanics training
- Balance training
Education
Education will be part of each one-to-one session with your therapist. Discussion will include the following:
- Your diagnosis and prognosis
- Reasons for treatment
- Proper technique to use with exercises
- Proper posture and body mechanics
- General wellness
- How to prevent future injury
Body Mechanics and Back Care Class
This two-hour interactive class will teach you:
- How to keep our back and neck healthy
- Basic anatomy of the spine
- Common causes of back and neck pain
- Supportive sleeping positions
- Body mechanics training for activities such as driving, lifting, racking, work and recreational activities
