Occupational Therapy for Children

PaintingPediatric Occupational Therapy is a skilled treatment that helps children attain their full potential in all facets of life. Occupational therapy provides patients with the "skills for the job of living."

For children, their occupations may be related to play, academic skills, handwriting, self-help skills, and achieving self confidence and social-emotional wellbeing.

Treatment addresses children who have difficulty reaching developmental milestones because a medical condition interferes with their physical development, coordination, communication or learning.

Services include a screening clinic, assessment clinic, individual evaluation/treatment, small group treatment and the classes listed at right. Conditions treated include:

  • Autism

  • Balance/Coordination problems

  • Brain injury

  • Cerebral palsy

  • Developmental disabilities

  • Muscle tone imbalance

Services typically include a customized treatment program for sensory integration - a "sensory diet" to improve activities of daily living such as dressing, bathing, eating, schoolwork, handwriting, home management and play. For more information on sensory integration, please read our comprehensive Sensory Integration page.

Family participation is highly encouraged at every step of the evaluation and treatment process. Families are directly involved in setting goals, working with the child in therapy sessions, and continuing therapy at home.

Handwriting: The Basics

Does your child struggle with poor handwriting or difficulty copying sentences from the board? Meriter is offering a handwriting workshop for children ages 7-9 and 10-12. The workshop meets for eight weeks and addresses visual motor skills and upper extremity coordination necessary for handwriting.

Activities focus on:
  • Upper body strength and stability
  • Eye hand coordination
  • Visual motor integration
  • Trunk stability
  • Midline control

These areas of focus are the building blocks needed for successful handwriting. Each week, new activities will be introduced to carry over at home. The workshop is planned and lead by licensed pediatric occupational therapists with certification in sensory integration, advanced training in visual-vestibular integration, sensory integration and the development of hand function and hand use in children and adolescents.

Classes will have a ratio of one therapist to three children. The cost for each class is $280. No prescription is needed, and no evaluations or formal documentation are performed. Learn more and register online now!
