The High Risk Clinic is a comprehensive clinic that provides care to the mother and unborn baby in a complicated pregnancy. Our clinic is staffed by four Maternal Fetal Medicine specialists and fellows from the University of Wisconsin faculty. To learn more about these specialists, visit the Our Staff section. The comprehensive team of specialists will assess, diagnosis and treat your condition, giving your baby the best possible start in life.

The clinic is staffed by an interdisciplinary team that supports the Maternal Fetal Medicine specialists, fellows and residents. The staff includes:

  • Registered Nurses
  • Medical Assistants
  • Dietician
  • Certified Diabetic Educator
  • Social Worker
  • Clinical Nurse Specialist
  • Genetic Counselors
  • Medical Students

Patients Seen at the High Risk Clinic

The following patients are seen by Maternal Fetal Medicine specialists, in partnership with their primary health care providers:

  • Patients undergoing diagnostic or therapeutic procedures during pregnancy, such as:
    • Comprehensive ultrasound
    • Chorionic villus sampling
    • Genetic amniocentesis, fetal surgery or treatment
  • Women with medical or surgical disorders, such as:
    • Heart disease and high blood pressure
    • Autoimmune diseases
    • Preeclampsia
    • Diabetes or other endocrine disorders
    • Kidney or gastrointestinal disease
    • Infectious diseases
  • Healthy women whose pregnancy is at markedly increased risk for adverse outcome, such as:
    • Abnormal AFP (alpha fetoprotein) blood test
    • Twins, triplets or more
    • Recurrent pre-term labor and delivery
    • Premature rupture of membranes
    • Recurrent pregnancy loss
    • Suspected fetal growth restriction (baby not growing enough)
    • Fetal concerns (gastroschesis, CCAM, IUGR)

Services Provided

The following services are provided:

  • Prenatal Care
    Women who see a healthcare provider regularly during pregnancy have healthier babies, are less likely to deliver prematurely, and are less likely to have other serious problems related to pregnancy.
  • Prenatal Diagnosis

  • Prenatal Consultation
    Your primary healthcare provider may desire recommendations from a Maternal-Fetal Medicine specialist because of your or your baby's condition.
  • Health Education

To be seen in the High Risk Clinic, your current healthcare provider must submit a referral. Meriter will also confirm your state of health insurance. If you wish to be seen at the High Risk Clinic, please discuss this option with your healthcare provider.
