It's not uncommon for parents to wonder what they can do for their baby while he or she is in the NICU.
While it's true that your baby needs special medical and nursing care, you have an important role to play just by being there. The love and attention you provide is irreplaceable, and is an important factor in your baby's healing and growth.
Your voice, touch and smell will become more and more familiar each time you visit your baby. While in your womb, your baby grew accustomed to your voice, as well as those of other family members.
Although nurturing in the NICU isn't easy, it is time well spent getting to know each other. Nurses will help you learn how to touch, hold, cuddle, feed and help with other aspects of your baby's care. Assisting with your baby's care while in the NICU also makes the transition to home an easier one.
