Other Surgical Services
The Meriter Heart & Vascular Hospital's experienced cardiothoracic
surgeons perform many other general thoracic (chest)
surgery services, in addition to the surgeries described
in the other pages of thissection. These include but
are not limited to:
- Carotid Endarterectomies (CEA) - Restores blood flow to the brain. For more information, read our
Carotid Endarterectomy (CEA) article.
- Chest Wall Surgeries - Examples include surgeries for chest wall tumors and deformities.
- Lung Resections - Removal of part of the lung.
- Mediastinal Surgeries - Removal of all or part of the thymus gland, for example.
- Resection (Removal) of Ventricular and Thoracic Aneurysms - Sometimes after a heart attack, the damaged wall of the left ventricle (the heart's main pumping chamber) becomes scarred and grows thinner and weaker. This is a ventricular aneurysm. A ventricular aneurysm significantly reduces the heart's pumping ability. A thoracic aneurysm is an enlarged area in the thoracic (chest) section of the aorta, the main blood vessel that carries blood away from the heart.
- Thoracoscopy - This procedure makes it possible for a physician to examine the lungs or other structures in the chest cavity, without making a large incision.
- VATS - Minimally invasive thoracic (chest) surgery. For more information, read our
Coronary Artery
Bypass Surgery article, which includes information about MIDCAB.
