Education and Support

Our Breast Care Services Manager is devoted to helping you with any of your breast health concerns and promoting continued improvement of your care. She will educate you about breast health and be a contact person throughout the diagnostic process.

Screening Tools

A screening mammogram is a low dose X-ray of the breast used to detect breast changes in patients who have no symptoms. A radiologist, specially trained in mammography, will read the films. In most cases, we will read your mammogram within a few days and send your primary care provider a report. We will send you a letter to inform you of the results of your mammogram within thirty days.

Diagnostic Tools

Sometimes a radiologist, after viewing a screening mammogram film, may wish to see additional views. This doesn't necessarily indicate a problem, but rather that a portion of the breast may need to be seen in more detail. This is called a diagnostic mammogram. The radiologist will read the diagnostic films immediately and send a report to your primary care provider. We will also send you a letter to inform you of the results.

Other diagnostic tools that we have available for patients with breast concerns include:

  • Breast ultrasound (diagnostic only)
  • Fine needle aspiration
  • Core needle biopsy
  • Stereotactic core biopsy
  • Galactography and ductography
  • Surgical biopsy
  • Sentinel lymph node mapping and biopsy

Treatment Options

In the event you are diagnosed with breast cancer, UW Health and Meriter Hospital offer the latest in technology provided by faculty physicians of the University of Wisconsin Medical School. Working with you, staff and faculty from our General Surgery, Plastic Surgery and Oncology Departments are available to provide the needed care.
