What are the chances that my baby will survive

Since babies need intensive care for many problems, your baby's doctor will be able to give you the best estimate of your infant's chances. S/he can take into consideration all factors important for your baby. But, no estimate is perfect. Some babies suddenly get sick and die unexpectedly; others defy all odds. Some of the factors important in determining survival are:
  • The kind of problem that requires intensive care
  • The severity of the problem
  • The effectiveness of treatment
  • If several body organs are involved or abnormal
  • The condition of the baby at birth
