What are the Chances that My Baby Will be Normal

Again, your baby's doctor will best be able to answer this question. Most normal sized babies do well without later problems in development even though they have been very sick. Babies at highest risk for abnormal development are those with brain injury or poor brain growth before birth. These include infants with:
  • Seizures
  • Coma
  • Abnormal formation of the brain or spinal cord
  • Bleeding into the brain before or after delivery
  • Stroke
  • Infection of the fluid around the brain
  • Too much fluid in the head (hydrocephalus)
  • Very small head size for the number of weeks of gestation
  • Chromosome or genetic problem
