Giving Back to Our Community

Every day, Meriter provides care and healing through quality healthcare services. But Meriter's impact on the community is broader than the care given within our hospital campus – we also participate in innovative community programs that offer information, hope and healing. Meriter is honored to give back to our community through these programs, because we know the impact that they have on the lives of area families. Part of the reason our community programs are so effective is that we work together with a variety of community partners. By working with schools, community agencies, the United Way and other healthcare organizations, we can better address the community's health and social issues and improve the community's well-being. If Meriter cannot be the solution to a problem, we try our best to be a catalyst for a solution by bringing the right people together to work on it.

These community benefit expenses, translated to a dollar amount, totaled a commitment of more than $33,262,505 from Meriter in 2009. But the real benefit is so much more than a dollar figure. As you'll see in the examples below, the real benefit is that we're finding real ways to give back to our community – inside and outside of our hospital campus.

Happy Smiles & A Happy Child!

Linda knew she had to take her 14-year-old son to the dentist. His adult teeth were coming in but he hadn’t lost his baby teeth yet.

“It had been a while since he had gone. Visits are hard for him,” states Linda. Her son, Adrien, is an energetic and giggly teenager who has cerebral palsy. “It just gives us a few more challenges. He doesn’t understand that he needs to sit still; he just doesn’t like it.”

Linda put off the dental appointments until Adrien complained of pain. “Adrien doesn’t use a lot of words but believe me, he lets you know when something is bothering him.He is relentless!”

With help from their family dentist, Adrien’s doctor and UW patient resources, Linda found the Max W. Pohle Dental Clinic, located in Meriter Hospital. The full service dental clinic specializes in helping patients with unique dental needs including those patients who have emotional or developmental challenges, have neurological disorders, or other concerns.

“When I found the Max W. Pohle Dental Clinic it felt like a miracle,” says Linda. “Even though Adrien giggled through the first appointment, the staff wasn’t fazed.” Within days, all of his dental care needs were taken care of – from cleaning, to pulling his baby teeth and filling cavities.

Once he was through the exam, Linda was happy to report that her happy child was back!
“Everyone was so helpful. We found the Max W. Pohle Dental Clinic.”
