What Role Do Rehabilitation Physicians Play in Patient Care?
Rehabilitation Physicians care for patients with acute and chronic pain related to conditions such as tendonitis, fibromyalgia and musculoskeletal problems that cause back and neck pain.
They also treat people who have experienced catastrophic events resulting in paraplegia, quadriplegia or traumatic brain injury, and individuals who have had strokes, other neurological disorders and orthopedic injuries.
Rehabilitation Physicians are trained to focus on the whole person, and strive to help patients improve not just their health, but also their daily functioning and quality of life.
ImPACT Testing is Now Available
The Rehabilitation Medicine Clinic is now able to provide ImPACT testing. ImPACT (Immediate Post-Concussion Assessment and Cognitive Test) is a user-friendly, online computer-based neurocognitive testing program that helps determine concussion severity, as well as if and when it is safe for an athlete to return to sports. ImPACT is the most widely used computer-based testing program in the world and is currently being used with many high school, collegiate and professional athletes.
Prior to injury, athletes take a baseline test. In the event of a concussion, the athlete can then be re-tested by a professional with ImPACT training and the results are compared to their original readings. This information is then used in conjunction with a full neurological exam to determine if and when an athlete can safely return to play, therefore reducing further risk of injury.
Patients can schedule a baseline test (at the link below) any time before an injury occurs. The baseline test is paid for by the patient out-of-pocket and is not covered by insurance. Baseline testing does not require a physician visit and is valid for 2 years after it is complete.
If you have already sustained a concussion, then contact your primary care physician. This test is only for those who have not sustained an injury. Cost: Cost is $20 for the baseline test which is not covered by most insurance plans, thus no insurance claim will be filed by the clinic.
