General Dermatology

Dermatologists specialize in treating the skin, hair, nails and mucous membranes (the lining inside the mouth, nose, and eyelids).

Our board-certified dermatologists diagnose and treat more than 3,000 different diseases in patients of all ages. We provide general, pediatric and procedural dermatology.

Some regularly treated dermatologic conditions include:
  • Acne
  • Rosacea
  • Warts
  • Eczema
  • Psoriasis
  • Rashes
  • Conditions of the hair and nails

Procedural Dermatology

Outpatient surgeries performed by our dermatologists include the removal of:
  • Skin cancers
  • Moles
  • Skin tags
  • Cysts
  • Other benign growths

Our dermatologists offer Narrow Band UVB (Ultraviolet B) for the treatment of psoriasis, eczema, vitiligo and other conditions. Photodynamic therapy is provided for patients with multiple pre-cancerous lesions (actinic keratoses) in sun-exposed areas. A pulsed-dye laser is available for the treatment of rosacea, broken blood vessels, warts and sun spots (lentigines).

Protecting Your Skin from the Sun

Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States, affecting nearly one in five individuals. The leading cause of skin cancer is UV radiation from the sun and tanning beds. Meriter Dermatology recommends the following steps:
  1. When outside, apply a UVA/UVB sun screen of SPF 30+ every two hours.
  2. Cover all areas of exposed skin even on cloudy days, cool days and in the winter.
  3. Sunscreen wears off. Reapply every two hours, or more frequently if swimming, sweating or toweling off.
  4. Check the expiration date. Most sunscreens have a shelf life of no more than three years.
  5. Seek the shade. Limit your exposure to the sun during the hours of 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  6. Wear hats and clothing that cover your skin.
  7. Sunglasses protect your eyes and the tender skin around your eyes from UV rays.
  8. Do not use tanning beds—ever!

The ABCDEs of Skin Cancer

Once a month, do an exam of your own skin, moles and blemishes. Checking once a month will make it easier to see if a spot has undergone a change. Even if you have no specific concerns, visit your primary care doctor or dermatologist annually for a skin check.

Not all skin cancers present the same symptoms. Some common signs include:

  1. Asymmetry – One side of the lesion is not like the other side.
  2. Border – The border of the lesion is irregular or poorly defined.
  3. Color – There is no certain color that is worse than another. However, if one lesion has multiple colors (shades of tan, brown, black), this may be a reason for concern.
  4. Diameter – If the diameter of a lesion is more than 6 mm (or larger than a pencil eraser), this may be a worrisome lesion.
  5. Evolving – If you have one mole that looks different from the rest, or appears to have changed, have a doctor look at it.
  • Another common symptom is a spot that is non-healing, bleeding, itching or crusting.

Skin cancer has a very high survival rate, especially when detected early. If you have a lesion you’re concerned about, call your doctor and have it examined.
