Meriter Classes and Events

This is a two-hour class is for patients who are new to blood glucose monitoring or for those who need a refresher on meter use. It covers how to test blood surgar and how to use the results of the testing. It will enhance your understanding of how food, physical activity and medicine affect your blood glucose levels. This class meets on an as-needed basis.

Many insurance plans cover all or a portion of the class. The Diabetes Care Team specialists are available upon referral from a primary care physician or other any other treating medical provider. Call your provider or ask at your next appointment.

Our ongoing diabetes education classes are taught by the dietitian, diabetes nurse educator and health psychologist. The classes are designed to assist you with developing diabetes knowledge and self-management skills as well as helping with behavior change. In addition, these classes give you the opportunity to expand your support network and to learn from others who are also living with diabetes. Our class sizes are small to allow for supportive group interaction. The content areas included in the classes are those specified in the National Standards for Diabetes Self-Management Education.

Journaling is commonly used in chronic pain management, recovery programs and adult learning, but journaling can also be used as a prevention tool. Proactive health journaling helps women translate personal reflection and feedback into actions that increase well-being by becoming in tune with physical messages our body give us and by using self-care techniques.

The insights gained from proactive health journaling - combined with creative self-care techniques and awareness of local health resources - can truly improve the quality of life and health for women!

The everywoman's journal workshop will cover five areas:  nourishing awareness; scattered loss, relating to life, respectful caring, and pure joy.

Participants of this 2 hour workshop will receive a specially-designed journal, guidebook, pen and health resource information.

Prenatal Exercise Featuring Aquatic and Land-based Exercise!
Experience Exercise for Two, a prenatal class that blends aquatic and land-based exercise! Mom and baby will both benefit from the soothing 82 degree water during a low-impact cardiovascular workout. Water combines buoyancy and natural resistance for a safe and effective exercise program. Bring your swimsuit and towel. Aqua shoes and/or flip-flops are optional.

Instructor
Exercise for Two is taught by Beth Triller and Courtney Wall-Crombie. Beth and Courtney both come from a Physical Therapy background as Therapy Aides and both are American College of Sports Medicine Personal Trainers and hold Moms in Motion Specialty Certifications through SCW Fitness Education.

Beth and Courtney are employees of the Capitol Lakes Retirement Community, teaching this class on behalf of Meriter. They enjoy teaching many types of fitness activities to all ages. Beth and Courtney are both high energy and caring instructors who strive to keep their students motivated during class while having fun along the way.

Cost and Schedule
Exercise for Two is offered at a choice of two days and times.

Session A: Monday and Wednesday 6-7:30 p.m. Courtney Wall-Crombie
Session B: Tuesday and Thursday from 5:30-7 p.m. Beth Triller

Attendees register for 16 sessions, which are held over 8 weeks. The cost for 16 sessions (8-week program) is $130. Before your first class, the instructor will schedule a one-time assessment with you, which costs $40. If you have insurance through Physicians Plus or Unity you may be eligible for fee reimbursement.

Exercise for Two is held in the Aquatic & Wellness Center of the Capitol Lakes Retirement Community. Capitol Lakes is located at 333 W. Main Street in downtown Madison. Free parking is available across the street.

Meriter's Get Fiit! Exercise and Healthy Eating Program will get you started on the path to achieving and maintaining a healthy weight along with a heart-healthy lifestyle. You will meet individually with a dietitian and a fitness trainer to develop a personal plan. And the group setting will give you a fun and comfortable atmosphere to exercise. 

Program Components:

• Ten weeks of three (3) 75 minute group exercise circuit classes per week
• Two (2) one-hour meetings with a Registered Dietitian
• Pre and Post Body Composition Assessment
• Individual and group emotional support
• Weekly education
• Free use of facility during the program

Cost: $349 for 30 small group training sessions which is only $11.60 per session. PLUS you receive 2 appointments with a fitness trainer and dietitian, weekly education, and unlimited access to the Wellness Center.  You are eligible for reimbursement through Physician’s Plus ($100-$200) and Unity’s Fitness First.

First-time prospective grandparents or those in need of a refresher can attend a comprehensive class, designed to cover all updates in infant care and safety.   Learn about the new recommendations for Safe Infant Sleep, car seat use, advice on infant feeding, and tips on grandparenting from near or far.   Be prepared for the newest arrival to your family tree! This class is especially designed for grandparents and grandparents-to-be only.

Does your child struggle with poor handwriting or difficulty copying sentences from the board? Meriter is offering a handwriting workshop for children in grades 2-3. This class includes focus on fine-motor skills and upper extremity coordination necessary for handwriting. Activities focus on upper body strength and stability, hand-eye coordination, visual motor integration, trunk stability and midline control. These areas of focus are the building blocks needed for successful handwriting. Each week new activities will be introduced to carry over at home. The workshop is planned and lead by licensed pediatric occupational therapists with certification in sensory integration, advanced training in visual-vestibular integration, sensory integration and the development of hand function and hand use in children and adolescents. Classes will have a ratio of one therapist to four children and run for 50 minutes with a ten-minute question and answer session at the end. What is ImPACT?
Meriter is proud to offer ImPACT testing to student athletes (age 11 and over) in our community. ImPACT (Immediate Post-Concussion Assessment and Cognitive Test) is a user-friendly, online computer-based neurocognitive testing program that helps determine concussion severity, as well as if and when it is safe for an athlete to return to sports.

ImPACT is the most widely used computer-based testing program in the world and is currently being used with many high school, collegiate and professional athletes, including the UW Badgers, Green Bay Packers and Milwaukee Brewers.

The program measures multiple aspects of cognitive functioning in athletes, including:
• Attention span
• Working memory
• Sustained and selective attention time
• Response variability
• Non-verbal problem solving
• Reaction time

Prior to injury, athletes take a baseline test. In the event of a concussion, the athlete can then be re-tested by a professional with ImPACT training and the results are compared to their original readings. This information is then used in conjunction with a full neurological exam to determine if and when an athlete can safely return to play, therefore reducing further risk of injury.

Patients can schedule a baseline test (below) any time before an injury occurs. The baseline test is paid for by the patient out-of-pocket and is not covered by insurance. Baseline testing does not require a physician visit and is valid for 2 years after it is complete.

After a patient has an injury, however, IMPACT testing is done as part of a physician’s visit and is billed to insurance. Most insurances will cover this testing, but, as always, patients should check with their insurance first if they are not sure about coverage. If you child sustains a head injury, you should make an appointment see your pediatrician - and mention to them that your child has taken a baseline ImPACT test in the past. If applicable, your physician will then arrange for a post-inury ImPACT test for your child. Please note that ImPACT testing after an injury cannot be done without a physician visit.

Cost:
Cost is $20 for the baseline test which is not covered by most insurance plans, thus no insurance claim will be filed by the clinic. Consult your insurance company if you have questions about coverage.

An interactive mom and baby class where baby is incorporated into yoga poses. Mom will experience gentle strengthening, stretching, and bonding with her baby. No experience necessary. Babies are welcome to nurse, snack, nap, or play with toys. Designed for babies up to 1 year old. This is a 6-week program.


This class is eligible for reimbursement through Physicians Plus and Unity Health Plans.

Does your child over-react to the sensation of clothing, physical contact, light, sound, food, or other sensory input?
Does your child show little or no reaction to stimulation, even pain or extreme hot and cold? 

They may be suffering from a sensory processing disorder – when information is not taken in or interpreted accurately.  This can result in problems with daily functioning, social relationships, behavioral challenges, regulating emotions, self-esteem, and learning. 

Meriter Hospital is offering a class to help parents and caregivers navigate the world of sensory processing.  You will learn helpful strategies to make each day a positive experience and help your child gain a sense of control in their daily life.  The class will be led by a pediatric occupational therapist and there will be a pediatric case manager available to provide information on community resources.  This FREE class will be offered 4 times a year for any caregiver/parent/guardian.

Kids have an innate drive to make friends and interact with their peers but may need help to develop positive relationships.  Meriter is offering a class to target and expand social skills for children in 6^th-8^th grade with the guidance of an Occupational Therapist and a Speech Therapist.  The class will build the foundational skills necessary to make and maintain successful social relationships.  Sessions will target basic conversational skills, regulation of emotions, strategies to promote positive engagement with peers, and build friendships. Each week new activities will be introduced to carry over at home. Class will meet 2 times per week for 4 weeks.

Cost for the 4 week class (8 sessions) is $400.  No prescription is needed. 

Grades 6-8 will take place Tuesdays and Thursdays 3-4 pm

Summer Class is July 9 – August 1, 2013

This 3 hour session is for those scheduled for total hip replacement surgery. In this session, you will meet with a physical therapist, occupational therapist, discharge planner and nursing staff member. Please plan to attend two weeks before surgery, if feasible. We encourage you to bring your support person to this class.

Valet service is available Monday – Friday, 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., and attendants will retrieve vehicles until 6:30p.m.

Join our certified Kundalini yoga instructor, Rebekka, for a fresh and personalized mid-day wellness retreat. From 11:45 am - 12:30 pm, you will experience a blend of breathwork, movement, stretching and meditation.
Kriyas, or yoga exercise sets, are designed to gently revive bodily systems, increase energy, enhance immunity and release stress.  You will learn easy-to-achieve poses for strength, flexibility, and balance

These classes are created to match each student's personal fitness level and need. Everyone is welcome.
Please bring a mat or thick towel and dress comfortably.

Directions to the Meriter Business Center: From the Beltline (12/18), take Rimrock Road South, go through two sets of stoplights, and take a right onto 89th Degree Street.  At the stop sign, turn left onto Novation Parkway and take the first entrance into the parking lot on the right.  The address is 2650 Novation Parkway.  Free visitor parking and the main lobby entrance are marked near the middle of the building.  Yoga sessions are held in the first room to your left as you enter the Meriter Business Center.
