The PGY1 residency program at Meriter Hospital provides each resident a wealth of experiences in a variety of patient care areas of the hospital. Each resident is required to complete the core rotations that are noted below as either block rotations or longitudinal rotations.  In addition, we offer an array of elective experiences that each resident can choose from.

The Resident and Program Director select elective rotations to enhance or complement core experiences. Electives are generally scheduled in the second half of the residency year to allow time for the Resident to develop areas of interest and to become familiar with the program and the hospital. In some circumstances, it may be possible to arrange for specific experiences at other teaching sites.

The length of each experience may vary according to the interest of the individual and the time(s) available. Examples of rotation lengths include: 4 weeks; 6 weeks; 8 weeks sequentially or distinctly (4 wks x 2); longitudinal (for example, practice management is 0.5-1 day/week over the course of the year).

Selection and scheduling of these experiences will be done at least semi-annually by the Program Director following discussions with the Resident and the individual preceptors. Semi-annual scheduling allows for flexibility within the program to meet the individual needs of each resident.
