About Nurse Residency
Meriter Hospital is proud to offer a 10 month nurse residency program for new graduate nurses. The nurse residency program is specifically designed to ease the transition from novice nurse to competent professional nurse. The program will help you gain the experience, skills and confidence needed to navigate the complexities of patient care.
At Meriter, you will find a commitment to nursing excellence that will support you in becoming the nurse you aspire to be. The program includes:
Evidence based structured educational experience to develop competence in nursing practice.
An opportunity to ask questions and review case study examples about specific patient situations, medications and procedures.
A supportive environment with small group discussion sessions and support.
Clinical shadowing experiences to better appreciate the complete health care experiences of a patient.
Coordination by an advanced degreed Clinical Nurse Educator in the Nursing Education Department of the hospital. The program coordinator will work with each individual resident as well as within the group learning sessions to assure that all possible educational resources are made available and learning needs are met.
Goals of Nurse Residency
Develop effective decision making skills related to clinical judgment and performance
Move beyond skill acquisition to the process of socialization into the profession of nursing.
Create a culture of retention by providing a supportive environment.
Encourage exploration and growth in leadership and advanced practice specialties within the field of nursing.
Establish outcome-based measurements of retention, critical thinking and confidence level from novice to expert nurse.
How to Apply
The basic requirements for acceptance into the Nurse Residency Program at Meriter Hospital are:
Accepted offer of employment as a newly graduated nurse at Meriter.
Graduate from an accredited school of nursing.
Successful completion of the NCLEX within six weeks of date of hire.
Successful completion of the initial hospital orientation and probationary periods.
Willingness to actively participate in all learning sessions and complete program-related activities which include but are not limited to clinical journaling, knowledge assessment and survey tool completion.
Commitment to working a minimum of two years within the designated clinical area.
