Virtual Tour Frequently Asked Questions

The following information should assist you with Meriter's Virtual Tour. If you have a question that isn't answered here, please e-mail the Web Coordinator.

Why would I want to download QuickTime?
Within our tours, this plug-in allows you to rotate within the rooms, zoom in on interesting features, and look up and down. Also, many sites use this popular, free plug-in from Apple. If you take the time to download it now, you will be able to use it in other sites. Once you download a plug-in, it permanently enhances the functionality of your Web browser.

I don’t have QuickTime on my computer. How do I download QuickTime?
First, visit the QuickTime site. (You don't need QuickTime Pro, which costs money and lets you design QuickTime files. You just need the free QuickTime player.) After filling out a short form, you will be asked where you want to save the QuickTime installation file. Most people choose to save these types of files in their Program Files folder so they can easily find them later. Download speed will depend on the type of modem you have and your internet connection.

Now that you have the installation file on your computer, you need to install QuickTime. Close all open programs on your computer and find the installation file you just downloaded. (If you are using Windows, you can find the file by opening your Windows Explorer or File Manager.) Doubleclick the file and follow the installation instructions. A few more necessary files will be downloaded to your computer. Then, you can open your browser again and start using QuickTime. For more complete directions, please visit the QuickTime site.

Does QuickTime cost anything?
No! The QuickTime player is free for anyone to use. QuickTime also offers QuickTime Pro for a low cost, but you only need this program if you will be designing QuickTime files.

You said QuickTime is a plug-in. Can you explain what a plug-in is?
Browsers such as Internet Explorer allow you to view Web sites' text, images and certain types of multimedia files. However, there are many kinds of multimedia files that browsers can't access. Plug-ins allow you to see and hear these multimedia files, because they are mini-applications that attach themselves to your browser and enhance its function.

In addition to QuickTime, other popular free plug-ins are RealPlayer, Adobe Acrobat Reader and Flash. Once a plug-in is installed on your computer, it remains a part of the browser and does not need to be installed again. You only need to reinstall the plug-in if a new version is released and you want to upgrade.
