History of Meriter

Madison General Hospital's Nursing Graduates in 1908In 1898, a group of individuals dedicated to the idea of a true community hospital formed Madison General Hospital. In 1919, Methodist Hospital joined its ranks. These two hospitals grew simultaneously in the decades that followed. Ultimately, they merged in 1987 to form Meriter.

Today's Meriter remains dedicated to the same spirit of serving the community as its predecessors. In the following sections, we celebrate the accomplishments of the dedicated men and women who preceded us.

Meriter Milestones

Some of Meriter's milestones include performing the city's first coronary artery bypass graft surgery and becoming the first hospital in southern Wisconsin to offer single-room maternity care. If you'd like to learn more about Meriter's milestones and history, please visit this section.
