In 1898, a group of individuals dedicated to the idea of a true community hospital formed Madison General Hospital. In 1919, Methodist Hospital joined its ranks. These two hospitals grew simultaneously in the decades that followed. Ultimately, they merged in 1987 to form Meriter.
Today's Meriter remains dedicated to the same spirit of serving the community as its predecessors. In the following sections, we celebrate the accomplishments of the dedicated men and women who preceded us.
Some of Meriter's milestones include performing the city's first coronary artery bypass graft surgery and becoming the first hospital in southern Wisconsin to offer single-room maternity care. If you'd like to learn more about Meriter's milestones and history, please visit this section.
From the first fundraising campaign for a Madison hospital to present day, volunteers have played an essential role in shaping Meriter.
In the past, Meriter ran two nursing schools. Today, more than 40 nurses who are graduates of these programs still work at Meriter. Learn about the roles nurses used to play in the Meriter organization.
The practice of medicine has come a long way in the past 100 years. Learn more about the physicians that shaped the Meriter organization.
